Looking forward to your colonoscopy? We didn't think so. But that could change. Scientists have found a new way for guys to get the procedure without having to take gut-busting laxatives the day before the test, according to recent research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
The new procedure is called laxative-free computed tomographic colonography (CTC). It lets you ditch the laxative and utilizes a far less intrusive rectal exam than the gold-standard test, a colonoscopy. The best news: The new method has about the same detection rate as a colonoscopy for larger colon polyps, which can turn cancerous, according to the study. However, it isn't quite as up to par with detecting smaller polyps. The PSA Test: Do You Need It?
While scientists perfect that method (it's not widely available), here are three ways to make that dreaded day leading up to your colonoscopy more bearable.
Modify Your Menu
The day before you start downing the bowel prep laxative, drink easily digested liquids like Jello, water ice, and coffee, and eat hard candy, says Patricia Raymond, M.D., a gastroenterologist and assistant professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Balm Your Bottom
It's not just for babies. That bowel prep laxative is going to flush out four liters of fluid through your rear. Creams like calmoseptine will smooth sensitive areas. Remember, there's no such thing as using too much, Raymond says.
Pimp Out Your Palace
Since you're going to be spending so much time on your toilet throne, make your bathroom a castle. Raymond tells her patients to bring a TV into their bathroom. Watch a movie, read a novel--just do something to take your mind off the uncomfortable situation.Additional research by Andrew Daniels
